About the Recipe
Crispy Toast, Ham, melty Cheese are the base for the nestled egg. The dish is known as Egg in the Hole or Toad in the Hole. Easy prep and only 15 minutes in the oven, this is a great recipe for feeding a brunch crowd.
Ingredients
4 slices bread - (thick slices of buttery brioche really elevate this dish)
Butter, as needed
4 slices ham
4 eggs
1/ 2 cup shredded cheese
Salt and black pepper, To Taste
Chives, or scallions, chopped for garnish
Preparation
Butter both sides of each piece of bread. Using an upside down glass or a round cookie cutter, remove the middle portion of the bread (reserve or cook alongside).
Place bread in a large non-stick pan, bottom side up, over medium-high heat. Allow bread to toast for 2-3 minutes.
Flip bread over and carefully place sliced ham in the hole of bread. Sprinkle cheese on top of ham and bread. Carefully crack egg into a small bowl and guide the egg into the hole lined with ham and cheese. Allow to cook for 3-5 minutes and then cook for 3-5 minutes more with the lid on (to fully cook through the egg white tops).
Serve immediately or heat in a pan on the stove top within 24 hours.
